Your time is now!

Since 1925, young people ages 15-18 from high schools around the world have come together at the AYF National Leadership Conference to discover their personal best and develop their leadership skills needed to make a difference in their homes, schools, communities and in the wider world!

What exactly takes place during NLC?

During NLC, you will find yourself living in a dynamic, diverse community where you are encouraged to open your mind to new ways of seeing yourself and others.  You will take on real challenges and meaningful responsibility as you live and learn with other young leaders. Using time-tested curriculum relevant to today's young people, you will participate in large group and small group activities. These activities are specifically designed to provide you opportunity to both learn and practice leadership skills essential for any of life's vocations.

Upon arrival at camp, you will participate in several intentional communities designed to bolster new friendships and enhance the experiential process of learning. The NLC is a four-year, progressive leadership curriculum, with most participants beginning the program between the ages of 15 and 18. Because of this, your opportunities for personal growth are increased not only by our high quality staff, but also by the cohort that surrounds you.

Throughout the week, there will be time allotted each day for Leadership Development, where you will learn concrete leadership skills from AYF's Tools for Team Leadership©. There will also be time during each day for camp activities, friendly competitions, interest groups (like swimming, crafts, music, etc.), and reflection time.

You will leave your time at NLC with hope and inspiration for the future you will lead!  You will head for home with many new friendships built on common and extraordinary experiences! You will return to your home community with the skills and capacities to be an agent of postive change!

What makes NLC unique to any other leadership development program?

Being that NLC is based on a four-year, progressive leadership curriculum, everyone coming to NLC for the first time will become a member of a "class," much like in high school.  Your class will be given an identity through a name and class colors.  During your first year, you will have the opportunity to additionally create a class banner and song, to represent all of your peers who regather at Miniwanca each year they remain eligible for the program.

The AYF also brings an asset-based approach to its programming and that culture is very much present at NLC.  You will only be asked to present your best self to those around you, and that best self will be universally and unquestionably accepted. AYF does not seek to define what "best" is for its participants; rather, we will provide you with ample opportunity to explore, discover and develop what your best is and how you can share that with those around you and the wider world.
