Wilderness First Responder
Course (WFR)
The Wilderness First Responder curriculum
uses the principles of long-term care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework
for learning. It is now the most widely recognized and most often required outdoor leader certification. Created to
provide outdoor leaders, guides, and rangers with the knowledge needed to deal with crises in remote settings. This is an
80-hour certification course with emphasis on prevention and decision making.
Instructors and Certification
Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities
(SOLO) is nationally recognized training school for wilderness and emergency medicine. Course are taught in a
highly practical and experiential manner and emphasize improvisation and the application of good judgment.
Certification is valid for three years.
Location
The American Youth Foundation’s Camp
Miniwanca—Shelby, Michigan. Miniwanca is a prime setting for a wilderness medicine classroom. The forest dunes with
hiking trails and woods along the shores of Lake Michigan provide anexcellent setting for wilderness medical
scenarios and simulations.
