"You learn about gratitude by giving.
You learn about humility by receiving"

We would like to thank all of the Miniwanca alumni, staff, participants and new friends who joined us for the 2008 Alumni Reunion and Volunteer Work Weekend. While gathering as a community, we were able to accomplish innumerable tasks in service to Miniwanca and participants have already had an opportunity to benefit from the fruits of their labor!

The Amazing Accomplishments:

  • Raked 4 miles of trail

  • Prepared 48 cabins for use

  • Made and ate 30+ s’mores

  • Removed Lewis Shelter

  • Remodeled Lower Explorer Lodge

  • Played 50+ hands of Eucre

  • Prepared all class cabins

  • Removed winter debris and leaves from 10-50 bay

  • Prepared East Camp Dining Hall

  • Stabilized 6 cabin footings

  • Removed remnants of West Camp Health Center

  • Learned 3 new camp songs

  • Prepared West Camp Council Circle

  • Washed 1000+ sets of dishes for both dining halls

  • Played 15 rounds of spoons

  • Organized and Inventoried 4 –Trail adventure gear

  • Played 15 rounds of glow-in-the-dark Frisbee

  • Removed winter debris from the front office

  • Delivered 10 trucks of firewood

  • Made 150 torches

  • Tested/replaced smoke detectors in every cabin

  • Kids camp removed trash from the beach and the dunes

And….most importantly

POLAR BEAR!

20 people took part in the 2008 inaugural dip in Lake Michigan!

Following a great day of service to our site, we gathered together for reflection followed by time on the indoor high ropes course where people took an opportunity to challenge themselves.

We had quite a varied group join us this year. Some have held a lifelong connection to Miniwanca going back to the founders while this was the first time meeting Miniwanca. Yet, at the end of the weekend, it would be hard to tell the difference between the two! Our ages spanned over 80 years and no matter what the age, we all found our place within the community and we found we were young at heart!

Our thanks and gratitude go out to the over 100 volunteers who came out and gave their time. We couldn’t have successfully prepared our site for the 2008 program season without you!

Please stay tuned for details on the 2009 Alumni Reunion and Volunteer Work Weekend!

Our camps are located in Shelby, Michigan and Tuftonboro, New Hampshire
