Methodology
Merrowvista uses hands-on learning experiences as
educational tools to help participants develop their leadership skills. The
framework for the construction of our programs is based on the experiential
learning cycle, which has four components:
- 1. Experience
- We provide experiences that lead to learning
and personal growth. These experiences are intentionally designed to promote
critical thinking about effective group skills. The activities are the tools
we use to meet the learning objectives of each program.
-
- 2. Reflection
- Once the experience has been completed, we
gather the group to “debrief” the activity in order to reflect on what
learning has occurred. By discussing what happened within the group during the
experience, participants gain insight into how they interact with others and
how to be a more effective leader.
-
- 3. Transfer
- Experiential learning, in order to be
effective, must take the form of lessons that have direct application to our
everyday lives. The experiences are framed metaphorically and used to help
transfer the ideas gained from reflection to the participants’ involvement at
school, home, work and community.
-
- 4. New Knowledge
- The New Knowledge stage is when students
apply what they have learned to our lives, to grow personally and to increase
our capacity for leadership. Carrying this new knowledge of ourselves and of
how we interact with others into the next experience allows the learning cycle
to continue.
